1/31/2024 0 Comments Redfall video gamePlayers fight back as one of four superpowered individuals, each of which has unique powers. In Redfall, a group of big pharma billionaires have turned into vampires and taken over a small Massachusetts fishing town. Despite that, a design identity crisis and a bevy of technical issues make this a surprising disappointment from a development team that’s capable of so much more. Redfall’s writing and gunplay are competent and build upon Arkane’s expertise. And while multiplayer is inherently more fun, lots of little annoyances stack up to make it an inferior choice compared to much better co-op shooters on the market. The ideas don’t mesh well design caveats made to accommodate multiplayer suck the blood out of Redfall’s single-player experience. It’s trying to be an intense, emotional, and political immersive sim about vampires, but also an endlessly replayable co-op, open-world shooter. Redfall is conflicted about what it wants to be. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy. That’s why it’s a shame that these are two of the only scenes in which Redfall captures that magic. Subscribe to my free weekly content round-up newsletter, God Rolls. I just cannot remember the last time I’ve reacted to a game quite like this.įollow me on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. Nor a score, given that I’m walking away this quickly. Redfall has nothing, and therefore, I just cannot give it anymore of my time. Of all the bad games I mentioned earlier, they at least had something that kept me coming back when other aspects faltered, combat, a story, loot, whatever. I do not quit video games, even bad ones. I cannot find anything redeeming about Redfall. I did in fact want off the island, but my solution was just turning the game off and walking away. We’re supposed to figure out what exactly happened on the island and how to get off, but it’s impossible to care. Puzzle solving is either “break a window to get past a locked door” or “use one of two different kinds of lockpicks.” Just very, very dull stuff punctuated by flashcard animated story beats that are a far cry from the flashy cinematic trailer that introduced this IP. Truly, we have an almost parody of open world quests with vendors sending to fetch a thing, then put it in another thing, then bring it back. Making the top 5, however, is map and quest design. The game also runs badly on console, but honestly, the 30 fps of it is probably not even on the top 10 list of things I dislike about the game. If there was an attempt at art direction here, trading off visual fidelity, it certainly did not work. Characters look like they’re made out of clay, and the visuals are further hampered by technical issues like texture pop-in. Arkane is known for its somewhat exaggerated art style, but other than the somewhat neat blood-coated sun effects, this is a landscape that looks a decade old, which is wild when you realize this is the first next-gen only Xbox exclusive released. And finally, all of this “live” focus means this is yet another game that must connect to servers and as such, you cannot pause it while playing alone. It’s also host-only progression, so quests you complete are not moving anything forward for your other three team members. There is no matchmaking for any part of the game, so you can only play with friends, or I guess find some Redfall LFG Discord that may or may not actually exist. The skill tree is essentially just “make your three set skills do more damage or last longer” but a full half of the tree is dedicated to co-op perks, and as someone who had zero plans to ever play this game with anyone else, it renders loads of nodes pointless.Ĭo-op was a terrible call here based on how it was implemented. No armor, no artifacts, nothing else but colored guns where you’re replacing your current arsenal with the highest level, best-color weapon you have, and not really thinking about much else besides that. The loot is limited to purely weapons of different rarities. The RPG aspects, the loot and leveling, are close to pointless.
